A spatially explicit ecosystem model of seston depletion in dense mussel culture ArchiMer
Grant, J; Bacher, Cedric; Cranford, P; Guyondet, T; Carreau, M.
A fully-coupled biological-physical-chemical model of a coastal ecosystem was constructed to examine the impact of suspended mussel culture on phytoplankton biomass in Tracadie Bay, Prince Edward Island, Canada. Due to the extent of mussel culture there, we hypothesised that shellfish filtration would control the concentration and distribution of phytoplankton and other suspended particles in the bay. Circulation was delineated with a tidally-driven 2D numerical model and used to drive an ecosystem model with a focus on pelagic components including phytoplankton production, nutrients, detritus, and mussels. The benthos were treated as a sink. Nutrients and seston were forced by tidal exchange and river input, with phytoplankton additionally forced by...

Bilan des connaissances sur la qualité de l'eau dans la zone du polder conchylicole de Bouin - Projet LEAUPOLD ArchiMer
Hatt, Philippe-jacques; Stavrakakis, Christophe; Buchet, Vincent; Dupuy, Beatrice.

Perceptions of shellfish aquaculture in British Columbia and implications for well-being in marine social-ecological systems Ecology and Society
D'Anna, Linda M; Vancouver Island University, Institute for Coastal Research; lmdanna@gmail.com; Murray, Grant D; Vancouver Island University, Institute for Coastal Research; grant.murray@viu.ca.
Shellfish aquaculture is often positioned as an adaptive alternative to traditional resource industries, but the social and cultural effects of expanding production on coastal/marine social-ecological systems are unclear. Reporting on a multimethods study, we present perceptions about shellfish aquaculture collected through interviews, participant-employed photography, and a household survey in British Columbia, Canada. With an approach focused on local preferences for social-ecological conditions and the ways in which those conditions may be enhanced or diminished, we indicate that perceptions of the effects of aquaculture on the environment, economy, and lived experience are composed of both objective and subjective components. Interview responses and...

Relations entre apports terrigènes et conchyliculture dans les Pertuis Charentais ArchiMer
Soletchnik, Patrick; Polsenaere, Pierre; Le Moine, Olivier; Guesdon, Stephane; Bechemin, Christian.
This work presents interactions between quantitative and qualitative river freshwater inputs and the shellfish farming (oyster and mussel) in the Pertuis Charentais. The quantity of freshwater (i.e. salinity) seems to have a weak influence on the shellfish farming contrarily to its quality determined by particulate and dissolved matters contained in the water. In autumn and winter, large precipitations have a "globally positive" effect amending the coastal ecosystem. Associated dissolved nutriments and the organic matter largely determine the quality of the coming spring growth for bred shellfish, itself controlling in turn the annual yield efficiencies. However, in winter their effects are postponed because of strong mineral load, low luminosity and...
